The Story of Liberty Therapy Associates

When Laurie and I (Christine) met in 2009, our connection was instantaneous - personally and professionally. Laurie was a senior couple and family therapist at the Coralville VA outpatient clinic, and I was a 4th-year doctoral student and practicum therapist, also at the VA clinic.

Laurie’s transparent, solution-focused approach and skill in joining compassionately with her clients provided an excellent model for me. To this day, I feel that my training under Laurie marked an important turning point for my work, enabling new heights of effectiveness with my clients.

We collaborated for many years after this practicum. In fact, Laurie consulted with me every week for 2 years as I developed a couple and family workshop series for student Veterans at the University of Iowa.

During these meetings, our conversations often turned into broader discussions about the field of mental health and couple and family therapy – sort of “state of the union” conversations about what the field does well and what it’s missing. One gap we identified was group-based interventions (i.e., workshops, trainings, and support groups). We also felt there was a lack of work with adolescents that incorporated their family systems, as well as non-medicinal treatment for attention deficit.

In 2013 and 2014, we began imagining what it might be like to open a private practice together – one that could address the gaps we identified in our weekly conversations. In 2015, we took active steps toward creating a practice together, and in January of 2016, we opened the doors to Liberty Therapy Associates!
